Backpack Buddies Fund
There are children among us that rely on important federal programs such as free or reduced-cost breakfast and lunch during the school year. The Back Pack Buddy Program is designed to meet the needs of chronically hungry children at times when other resources are not available, such as weekends or school vacation.
This program is a national model that the Chisholm Trail Communities Foundation is implementing locally in partnership with the Georgetown Ministerial Alliance. More than 100 communities throughout America have this important program. Visit the Georgetown Back Pack Buddies web site
How it works:
* Backpacks are filled with food that children take home on weekends.
* Food is child-friendly, nonperishable, easily consumed and vitamin fortified.
* Backpacks are directly distributed to children on the last day before the weekend or vacation.
If you want to help get this program off the ground, here's an idea: raid your closet for cloth tote bags or backpack-like bags that you may have received at a conference or event, but don't use. Bring them to the Chisholm Trail Communities Foundation office on the south side of the square in Georgetown. Your bags will be used for the pilot program.
